I’m entering Black & White Autumn.
This is the time of the year that I concentrate exclusively on my black & white photography. Last year it began in mid-September and for the next two and a half months only one image I shot was in color.
Typically this exercise starts in the fall—right around when I feel like I need a change—and then it goes for a bunch of weeks, ending just about when I feel like I am done.
Last year I was able to progress because this forced me to approach my walks with a different mindset. Over the weeks I slowly began to develop an eye for what would make a good black & white image and in the end, I liked a lot of what I shot.
The added challenge for me this year is time—with my new job I have less free time so getting out to shoot is harder. Maybe this will be the spark that forces me to find that time.
If anyone is interested in coming along on the journey, please let me know. As I write about the experience I’d love to share links to others who are also trying this out. Or, if you’re not a writer/blogger, I can share some of your images, experiences, or thoughts here.
I have also collected several resources—black & white tips, videos, books, and exercises—which I will dig into and possibly write about.
For the moment, before I kick off, one last color image.
This last photo really draws me in. Well done! Love it. I hope we get to see your b&w work too!
Love the layers and complexity in this image - it is really captivating. I'm looking forward to seeing your black and white images.
