Thanks Frank. I wouldn’t say that this was a ‘less expensive camera’ even though it was pocket sized. That said, I agree. Check this post from a few weeks ago: https://open.substack.com/pub/randomcapture/p/sfmoma-with-mom?r=dk9e3&utm_medium=ios

I love the man from behind. Such emotion in that photo in just the way he is holding himself and the cup.

I will check it out. And: Welcome! You will find there is a great photo community here. Feel free to ask any questions as you begin to dig in on substack.

Looks like it's working well for you Josh! What did you get? We also acquired something smaller recently for having with us more frequently. A bit of 'vintage digital' – the Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX100, which I grabbed from eBay after seeing a glowing recommendation on YouTube by One Month Two Cameras (great channel by the way). I really like the shadows on the parking lot / wall? And the exposure of the Jimmy Fallon interior is great.

I got the Ricoh GR iiix.

I think I had that Lumix once when it was new and returned it because I just couldn't make it work for me. It was the only time I did that. Other then that liked everything I've gotten and gotten good use out of everything. I always wondered what if I had stuck with the Lumix. I could tell the quality was great but I just was not ready to figure out how to get the most from it because it was such a change from the Nikon DSLRs I was using at the time.

I of course thought of you when I was taking the parking lot shadows. Especially your multiple arrows.

Shooting that picture was fun. I did a 15 mile bike ride with my 15 & 18 year old sons. We rode around the edge of San Francisco and at one point we stopped near Fisherman's Wharf so they could go go into one of their favorite child hood/pre-pandemic destinations (https://museemecanique.com/). I didn't want to leave the bikes — even locked — so I found an empty pier building/parking lot to wait and get out of the sun. In the tiny open area I tried to find a bunch of shots to test out the camera. Here is one other I liked from that shoot https://tinyurl.com/43kswkhy. I felt it was a little cliche (or at least similar too similar to what I have done often before).

Nice, the Ricohs certainly seem to be popular, but I have never even held one. Thanks for the additional context on the shadows!

p.s. on the Jimmy Fallon:

1) Thanks. I have been consciously trying to pay more attention to exposure vs. putting everything in the middle.

2) Go back and see the previous post: https://randomcapture.substack.com/p/four-week-with-less-photography. There is a similar photo of an olympic athlete in black & white.

I began to wonder if there is a series here but other then black & white vs. color, different subject and slightly different angle, I don't know how I would keep it fresh beyond these two.

If you or anyone else has suggestions let me know. Otherwise I may move on (or keep in the back of my mind incase I ever see another shot that fits but doesn't repeat).

I would just keep shooting them, and something might emerge Josh. I think I prefer the color though, which will inevitably vary during the different times of day...

Thanks. My dad used to say “use it in good health" every time we got something new. Your comment made me remember that. Thanks!

i like the second photo very much. there are other photographers on substack using that camera and all are happy with it. i have 2 pocket cameras, both are made from plastic and using a standard 35mm film

I have been carrying my Ricoh GRIIIx around for 1 1/2 years now and love it! Amazing little camera! I hope you will have as much fun with yours as I have with mine!

Thanks. Enjoying it so far. The one thing I’m trying to figure out is the best way to carry it. Not all of my clothes have pockets big enough. Usually I put the hand strap around my wrist and grab the camera. But sometimes I wanna put it away. I’m looking for a long strap that would go on my shoulder and go into lthe two ittle holes on the right side. Any thoughts?

Nice work with new camera. Ricoh GR is also my favorite. Still hoping they come with a b&w sensor.
